PRESS QUOTES

"WHEN WE LEAVE is such a powerful film that the academy could not ignore it. It’s heartbreaking. And the subject matter is intense, but this is a must see film."

-VARIETY, Awards Daily's Oscar Countdown - Watching Oscar 24/7, Special to Awards Daily, Brian Whisenant

PRESS QUOTES

"I consider WHEN WE LEAVE one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is Bicycle Thief good, and the kind of movie I like the most: a simple yet meaningful story told without bells and whistles and with a small number of major characters. WHEN WE LEAVE is a remarkable artistic achievement. You must see this film."

-THE HUFFINGTON POST, Joseph Smigelski

PRESS QUOTES

Jury members included Hope Davis, Aaron Eckhart, John Hamburg, Cheryl Hines, John Ridley, Gary Ross, Gary Winick

"WHEN WE LEAVE examines one woman’s struggle for personal freedom. It’s a theme often explored, but rarely told with such humanity, subtlety, craftsmanship or immediacy. A riveting and heartbreaking story of a woman trapped in an abusive relationship, confronting not only her marriage but the cultural prejudices that bind her. Through brutality, the film remains a story of tenderness, compassion, family and the human need to love and be loved."

VARIETY, Tribeca Film Festival – Jury Statement (29 April 2010)

PRESS QUOTES

"…territories are bound to appreciate the realism and muscular shooting by a woman director and crew (shades of Kathryn Bigelow and Zero Dark Thirty) on location in northern Afghanistan. The immediacy and tension with which Aladag conveys the daily life of the soldiers is something to take home."

-THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

PRESS QUOTES

"Inbetween Worlds is a sensitive corrective to more partisan war dramas” and the "film's visual palette, as well as its marriage of classic melodrama with contempo grit, is most strongly reminiscent of Susanne Bier ́s earlier work."

-VARIETY

PRESS QUOTES

"Inbetween Worlds is a nuanced story, stylishly shot with a good deal of integrity", which '"should attract international arthouse audiences intrigued by the added weight of a German military presence in a modern battle zone. With war films such as The Hurt Locker shot outside their location, her Afghanistan shoot is one of the few to put boots on the ground, and all credit to her and her team."
-SCREEN DAILY

PRESS QUOTES

"Extremely precise… with great power and realism."
-LE FIGARO

PRESS QUOTES

"A sober and hard-hitting drama."
-L’EXPRESS

PRESS QUOTES

"It´s interesting to see a war movie from a female perspective. There are explosions, but it´s really not about the explosions. Rather, it's about what connects people through war and how soldiers who are told to follow orders at all costs sometimes just can't do it."
-WOMEN AND HOLLYWOOD

PRESS QUOTES

"It’s political, it’s timely, it’s depressing, it’s unhappy, it’s a damn well made military thriller – what more could a Berlinale Jury ask for!"
-ALEXFARBAFILM.COM

PRESS QUOTES

"Outstanding! IN BETWEEN WORLDS generated great enthusiasm in the Berlinale competition. A first-classly directed film. The director works with extraordinary sensitivity on the human and cultural tensions."
-NZZ

PRESS QUOTES

"For the first time, German cinema dares to tell a war story about its own army — about the present, not the past. And it does so without reservations or whitewashing."
-EL MUNDO

PRESS QUOTES

"The film impresses through the intensity of its ellipses, its confidence, and the director’s storytelling talent. One must master one’s craft not to feel obliged to explain everything, while still giving the characters complex depth without excessive dialogue."
-CINEUROPA

PRESS QUOTES

"A weighty and highly worth-seeing film. Free of pathos. The film is also a contribution to the debate in which Germany is being called upon to assume greater international responsibility."
-NZZ

PRESS QUOTES

"Truly spectacular. I compliment Ms. Aladag on a great film. I highly recommend this film as a window into a world and an issue not prevalent in the news but very real, relevant and timely."
-FILM GUIDE, Tribeca Film Festival

PRESS QUOTES

"This is a film you cannot escape from."
-MILLIYET

PRESS QUOTES

"A boundary-breaking film about otherness: WHEN WE LEAVE."
-MILLIYET

PRESS QUOTES

"WHEN WE LEAVE is an important movie. It’s so intense, it’s breathtaking, it hurts. Everyone should see this movie. It can make a difference."
-WARIS DIRIE

PRESS QUOTES

"It’s a universal story that will connect with audiences. number of major characters. WHEN WE LEAVE is a remarkable artistic achievement. You must see this film."
-THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER

PRESS QUOTES

"This is a tremendous and well-crafted film that is astonishing and eyeopening in its content and subject, and quietly revealing in its style of storytelling."

FEO ALADAG | INDEPENDENT ARTISTS

PRODUCER / WRITER / DIRECTOR

Films written, directed and produced by Feo Aladag and her production company Independent Artists have screened at over 170 leading international film festivals worldwide, earning more than 55 international awards and over 20 major nominations.

Her work has been recognised with some of the most prestigious honours in international and European cinema, including the LUX European Film Prize (first awarded to a woman), the German Film Award (LOLA), Best Film in the World Narrative Feature Competition at the Tribeca Film Festival, Competition selections at the Berlin International Film Festival, the Europa Cinemas Label, multiple jury prizes at major internationally renowned film festivals, and an official submission to the Academy Awards.

Producer, writer and director Feo Aladag is internationally recognised for her uncompromising, politically resonant and deeply human storytelling. Through her Berlin-based production company Independent Artists, she has built a body of work that bridges strong authorship with hands-on production leadership.

Feo achieved worldwide recognition with her debut feature WHEN WE LEAVE, which was selected as Germany’s official submission to the Academy Awards. The film screened at over 120 international film festivals, won 50 international awards, and received 11 major nominations, including at the Tribeca Film Festival, the LUX Film Prize, the German Film Award, and the Berlin International Film Festival (Europa Cinemas Label). The film introduced Feo as a distinct new voice and received broad international attention within European cinema.

Her second feature IN BETWEEN WORLDS premiered in Competition at the Berlin International Film Festival and went on to screen at 50 international film festivals worldwide. The film received significant international jury and industry recognition, including the Jury Prize for Best Feature (New Directors) at the São Paulo International Film Festival, as well as awards for acting and cinematography. Shot entirely on location in Afghanistan under extreme political and security conditions, the film further cemented Feo’s reputation for combining bold artistic vision with exceptional production leadership.

Across her work, Feo’s films have taken her to Turkey, confronting the realities of so-called honour killings; to war-torn Afghanistan, bearing witness to the enduring human need for bridge-building across political and cultural divides; and to West Africa, following underage refugees from Mali and Niger on their journey toward safety and freedom. Her storytelling is consistently marked by emotional precision, cultural depth and global relevance.

Writing, directing and producing all of her films, Feo has long practiced a fully integrated, author-driven and showrunner-style approach, assuming creative, financial and strategic responsibility from development through delivery.

Alongside her filmmaking work, Feo remains actively engaged as a jury member within German and European film funding structures as well as cultural institutions, contributing to the shaping of contemporary European cinema. She is a member of the European Film Academy, the German Directors’ Guild, and the German Film Academy (Section Producers), and regularly serves on juries for major awards and funding bodies.
