SYNOPSIS

What would you sacrifice for your family’s love? Your values? Your freedom? Your life?.

German‐born Umay flees her oppressive marriage in Istanbul, taking her young son Cem with her. She hopes to find a better life with her family in Berlin, but her unexpected arrival creates intense conflict. Her family is trapped in their conventions, torn between their love for her and the traditional values of their community. Ultimately they decide to return Cem to his father in Turkey. To keep her son, Umay is forced to move again. She finds the inner strength to build a new life for herself and Cem, but her need for her family’s love drives her to a series of ill‐fated attempts at reconciliation. What Umay doesn’t realize is just how deep the wounds are and how dangerous her struggle for self‐determination has become…

“I consider WHEN WE LEAVE one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is Bicycle Thief good, and the kind of movie I like the most: a simple yet meaningful story told without bells and whistles and with a small number of major characters. WHEN WE LEAVE is a remarkable artistic achievement. You must see this film.”
The Huffington Post, Joseph Smigelski

“It’s a universal story that will connect with audiences.”
The Hollywood Reporter

“WHEN WE LEAVE is such a powerful film that the academy could not ignore it. It’s heartbreaking. And the subject matter is intense, but this is a must see film.”

“This is a tremendous and well-crafted film that is astonishing and eyeopening in its content and subject, and quietly revealing in its style of storytelling.”
“Truly spectacular. I compliment Ms. Aladag on a great film. I highly recommend this film as a window into a world and an issue not prevalent in the news but very real, relevant and timely.”
Tribeca Film Festival – 2010 Film Guide

“The jury, which included actors Hope Davis and Aaron Eckhardt, said in a statement that WHEN WE LEAVE „examines one woman’s struggle for personal freedom. It’s a theme that is often explored – but rarely told with such humanity, subtlety, craftsmanship or immediacy.”
Los Angeles Times

“WHEN WE LEAVE examines one woman’s struggle for personal freedom. It’s a theme that is often explored – but rarely told with such humanity, subtlety, craftsmanship or immediacy, as in tonight’s winning entry. WHEN WE LEAVE is a riveting and heartbreaking story of a woman trapped in an abusive relationship, who must not only free herself from that marriage, but also the cultural prejudices and judgments that would keep her there. Feo Aladag built the nuances of her film over a six year period. She rehearsed her actors for seven months. She immersed herself in every detail of a culture that is revealed to us in remarkable detail. The result is a film that balances complex social issues with honest human yearnings. Through the brutality, WHEN WE LEAVE is also a story of tenderness, the struggle for compassion, the inexorable pull of family and the need to love and be loved.”
Tribeca Film Festival, Award Ceremony, 29.04.2010. Jury: Hope Davis, Aaron Eckhart, John Hamburg, Cheryl Hines, John Ridley, Gary Ross and Gary Winick

“You cannot withdraw from this film!”

“The best German film since „The Lives of Others“.”

“Very precise…with force and strong realism.”
